| If anyone is interested in getting a song reviewed by me, then I am more than happy to do it. WARNING: I will be honest. I will tell you what I THINK is good about it, and what I THINK isn't so good. Otherwise why would you even want me to right? This is just my single, solitaire opinion which I have stated before is about as valuable as a fart caught in a jar. So if you take a bad review too seriously then...well....I guess maybe you do have problems. Fair enough? I already know many people will disagree with my thoughts but maybe it will, if nothing else, get more folks to do reviews. Don't be too shy though. I'm a pretty nice guy and all of my criticism will be as constructive as I can make it. So with all that said.......Bring it on! |

Wow. I finally get to do a review after having this thing posted for over a month! I hope it's not because you are all cowards or something.
Warmer- If you are a coward, I can see why you had a momentary boost of confidence with this song. It is absolutely beautiful. My initial response to this song was kind of an eyeroll (sorry) since I was expecting some run of the mill emo stuff based off of the opening music. Your voice, at first, appeared to be trying a bit too hard to pop in and out, but I settled into this effect nicely after about 1.5 seconds (literally). Sorry all of this adjustment was my hangup as I am more of the "jugband" type, I guess.
The production value of this song is top notch and unless you have bat ears anyone should agree that it is national radio-ready. The string arrangement is almost the life force of this song from start to finish, not overdone at all but there just enough to make you feel the desparity that goes right along with the subject matter. Guitar playing is fantastic. Every pluck and strum are magically appropriate for thier place in time. That, to me, has always been a stand out flaw in delicate songs like this, but you execute each increase and decrease in power masterfully (not sure if you did that while playing or mixing but it worked great!). The lyrics are very expressive, and while I had trouble making out a few lines, I got the message. Dont worry about that though, I never understand all of the lyrics to anything. Your voice portrays a man long since darkened by the shadow of heartache and despair. I actually pictured a dimmed blue light setting that represented a place in my heart. Theres a couch there where I sit and listen to kindred spirits in pain. Oddly enough I haven't been there in years, same house, just not that particular room. I could go on and on about how good this song is but I fear I will just venture deeper and deeper into my space cadet analogies and it may be better if I move along to the few, very few, points that I felt were not brilliant.
First off, even though I realize my personal hangups had an initial effect, I still feel in the very first verse your singing is a little too "quick". Pops up and out really fast and while this is actually great and works well, I would recommend about a nano-second longer on each at first just to eaze the listener into this pattern.
Second, At the end when there are dueling voices I felt that it was not called for and it seemed to take away from the lonesome feeling that made this song (one of the things) so amazing. It almost gives you a sense that you have some power and control when, I was convinced, you are alone, confused, and vulnerable.
Third, I dont know if this is bad or good. You sound hauntingly familiar to Robert Smith from The Cure. Im gonna say its a good thing myself since while some from my generation may say you are doing it on purpose, you not only sound like him, but you seem to posess his spirit. The new generation will be in for a treat if you carry something similar to that proverbial torch.
Overall: Dude you rock, I strongly suggest pushing this on as many A&R reps as you can find. You have a career if you go and get it. Hell, you may already have one, I don't know you, but if you dont look into it. If you can make me like an emo song that much, I'd say you got skills! |

Thanks alot for the review, it is good to get feedback especially one that goes in detail and explains their statements. I am going to go over the mix and have a play around with your suggestions, I might change it I might not but it is good to try out what another person would want to hear.
Now about 'the cure' reference, I am still (shame on me) to really listen to any of the cure stuff apart from the 'hits' but pretty much everyone mentioned the cure when talking about my stuff, which is great but must be some coincidence, I am going to now check out their back catolouge, sounds like I should enjoy! |
